Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.

Author Guidelines

Information Technologies and International Development does not accept submissions that are simultaneously under consideration by other publications. Submissions are welcome for the following journal sections:

Book Reviews
Reviews of books that provide a description of a book related to the field and scope of ICT4D that also includes a personal commentary and opinion by the book reviewer that might prompt rich discussion and feedback. Book reviews can be up to 2,000 words in length. 

Forum

Notes, letters, and reports that respond to previously published articles; summaries of conferences, workshops, and other relevant meetings; reviews of new books of interest to the field; overviews of emerging research areas and new ideas; or essays that generally engage the readership. Forum pieces are expected to meet a high bar for novelty, controversy, or other intellectual contribution. They are typically under 1,500 words in length.

Research Articles
Manuscripts reporting significant original research, typically on the order of 6,000-9,000 words in length.

Research Reports
Shorter communications detailing original research results, typically containing on the order of 4,000 words.

Special Issue Submissions
Note: If appropriate, please enter the name of the special issue you are submitting to in the Comments for the Editor section during Step 1 of the submission process.

Formatting

Submitted manuscripts should be double-spaced with 12-point text and employ consistent fonts and formatting throughout. All pages should be numbered. Because the review process is blind, authors should avoid making unnecessary references within the paper body that will reveal their identities. To ensure the integrity of the blind peer-review for submission to this journal, the following steps should be taken to remove all identifying information in the text and the file properties:

1. The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text, with ";;Author;;" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the author's name, article title, etc.

2. With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.

References and Citations

Follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 6th edition, for citation and reference styles, and alphabetize your list of references. Please use parenthetical (author-date) citations throughout. This means that the author's last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text—for example, (Smith, 2007)—and a complete reference list should appear at the end of the paper. Following are some examples of APA-formatted references:

Book With Two Authors

Print Journal Article With More Than Six Authors
Jones, L. D., Witteveen, M. Z., Taratus, T. E., Bryan, A., Smith, C., Rubinski, E.R., et al. (2007). Properly formatted references: Myths and realities. Journal of References, 72, 212-256.

Tables and Figures

All tables should be clearly labeled on the line above with an Arabic numeral (e.g., Table 1, Table 2) and a title. Sources should be cited below the table. Images and line art should be submitted as JPG, GIFF, TIFF, or EPS files. Figures should be clearly labeled below the visual with an Arabic numeral (e.g., Table 1, Table 2) and a title. Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions for materials produced by others.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
2. The submission file is in an editable file format such as Microsoft Word, RTF (Rich Text Format), or WordPerfect document file format.
3. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
4. If submitting to a peer reviewed section of the journal, author names are not included in the text. Any references to the author's name have been replaced with ";;;;;;;;;;;Author.";;;;;;;;;;; The author's name has also been removed from the document's properties.
5. The authors have obtained permissions to modify or reproduce materials produced by others and have cited them correctly within the article.
6. If the submission is to be considered for a special issue, the name of the special issue was included in the Comments for the Editor section during Step 1 of the submission process.
7. All spellings must be rendered in American English. To change British or Commonwealth spellings to their American equivalents, please see the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary.
